It’s happened to all of us.

Here you are, starting a healthy eating plan (ahem, Paleo), you get past the hiccups and bumps of the first few weeks, and finally you’re in a place where you’re starting to see the digits on the scale moving the way you want them to move.

And then it happens.

Someone asks you to go out to eat. All of a sudden it’s like a huge wrench was just thrown into your dieting efforts.

It’s not like you didn’t know this was eventually going to happen. You aren’t living in a bubble after all. At some point someone was going to want you to grace them with your presence for a night on the town. Still though, you’ve just worked your buns off to get to a good place with your dieting and the last thing you want to do is take a step backwards.

So what do you do?

Tell them you’re washing your hair or waxing your beard?

Tell them you have to go out of town?

Panic and say you’re sick?

You could do these things, but sooner or later these excuses will run out and then you’ll be right back where you started again.

Lucky for you, you’re eating Paleo, and for Paleo dieters eating healthy is simple and easy, even when eating out.

So what are these Simple Strategies for Eating Out While Staying Paleo?

Well for starters, you’ll want to check the menu out ahead of time whenever. This lets you go into the restaurant with a ‘plan of attack’. Your job is to make sure your main meal has three things:

  1. Meat or Fish (nothing processed, so something smothered in breadcrumbs or swimming in sauce won’t work)
  2. Vegetables (Paleo-friendly, of course)
  3. A good Fat (e.g. olive oil)

For example you could have some grilled salmon, a side of asparagus, and a baked or steamed sweet potato. Or if you are looking for something a little meatier you could grab a steak with a sweet potato and side of broccoli.

It can also help to have a salad before your meal. This is a great way to get in some healthy olive oil (extra virgin, please!) as well as extra veggies.

Dessert can be as simple as a bowl of fruit.

Many restaurants will have pound cake with fruit or some other fruity concoction as dessert. Unless it’s covered in syrup, you can just ask for the fruit without the rest of the dish. Another easy dessert option is to make your own delicious dessert before you go out. This way while your friends are busy chowing down on those sugary desserts you can be thinking of those yummy Paleo brownies that are calling your name.

Eating out while you are on a diet is hard, but it doesn’t have to be when you’re staying Paleo. Just a few small strategies before you go out can get you ready for restaurant success.
